Did you know the electoral college’s original purpose was to count slaves as 3/5ths of a non-voting person for purposes of electing a President? IOW, direct election would not allow slaves to be counted in that election by direct ballot because they (obviously) were not allowed to vote.
It serves no purpose today and has a tainted past. Given that, isn’t it long overdue to get rid of this artifact of slavery?
Because it exists it creates a handful of toss-up states, all of which get far more attention of the candidates. All of the others can be ignored as they are “in the pocket already”,
Direct election ends toss up states and puts every voter on equal ground, even in one party states like California.
The CommonSense party can’t make this change happen but it is something that can serve as an aspirational statement for voter equality.
