I’m all for redistributing, at least as the Governor is proposing it, which seems transparent and fair. We must do what we can to combat the immoral and evil acts of Donald Trump and his sycophants. It may be immoral in its own right from a deontological perspective, but it is entirely moral from my perspective from a utilitarian perspective. I honestly can’t believe you, Tom, or any other person who wants to preserve democracy and the welfare of ALL people could have any qualms whatsoever about redistributing in California!
Gerrymandering needs to done away with at national level
Gerrymandering is a Huge problem and it needs to fixed in ALL states simultaneously otherwise we...

Dear William,
I am grateful for your post, even though we disagree. My best response to the utilitarian perspective is to drive your example to the absurd. We could adopt a state-wide at-large slate of legislative members. That could be done by referendum, and the result would be democratic because the people had voted for it. But it would result in 80/80 Democratic Assemblymembers and 40/40 Democratic State Senators. If that would be unacceptable to you, then it is a difference in degree, not in kind, to allow Congressional districts to be drawn with the purpose and effect of suppressing minority party Members of Congress.
There are some means that are not acceptable, despite the ends.
Kindly,
Tom
