Open Policy Discussion

In normal times I would oppose Newsom’s redistricting proposal. However, if people don’t fight Trump, we won’t have to worry about elections in the future since we won’t have any. California does not exist in a bubble, and gerrymandering in response to gerrymandering and worse is definitely the lesser evil. If there was ever a time to be a realist, this is it. And the voters will get to have their say.

I respect your opinion and that it differs from mine. I’d just add that “the voters will get to have their say” cannot be a sufficient defense of this proposal. Our democracy has safeguards for minority views. At some point, if we value pluralism, we have to protect minority views. This proposal, by design, would bring California’s US House delegation to only 4 Republicans from among 52 total. That’s pretty close to extinction of minority party viewpoints on all matters affecting California in the US House.
