Multi member congressional districts
Dear Readers, I am writing to express my opposition to the multi-member Congressional district...
The way I see it, we don’t have much choice now that Republicans have used it to pervert the system such that they will automatically have 5 more Republican districts despite the fact that their actions entirely destroy the central concept of democracy–which is to enact the will of the people.
The people need fairness in elections. We need to know that we pick our politicians, they don’t pick us. With the recent gerrymandering in Texas, Republicans have once again loaded the dice in their favor. To even the playing field, we must do what we can–even knowing that the best system would be to eliminate gerrymandering entirely.
We are faced with choosing between the only thing we can do to maintain a semblance of fairness in our voting system, and standing on principle, which would likely result in giving Republicans even more power. It’s not much of a choice, but it’s where we are.
The damage Republicans are doing every day is the reason we must fight back. RFK’s mandates in healthcare, the horrific immigration policies that include “disappearing” people they target–regardless of lack of evidence of any crimes–and their plans to privatize everything from social security to the weather service mean we must do everything possible to stop them from continuing to abuse our system so they can maintain power.
We need to fight fire with fire now. Nothing else will be effective.
