Redistricting now is critically important

by | Aug 25, 2025 | Redistricting

I voted for the independent commission. That was when politics was normal and it was pro-democracy. But now CA has to redistrict before the 2026 mid-terms. We are on the verge of falling to a corrupt authoritarian dictatorship under Trump and authoritarian MAGA elites. That is not irrational or hyperbole. It is fact. The USSC has immunized Trump against crimes in office, the Democratic Party is powerless, divided and in chaos, and federal institutions and restraints on authoritarian power have fallen, e.g., Inspector Generals fired, ethics officers fired, FBI and DoJ weaponized, and federal courts neutered. Our last best hope is to push authoritarian Republicans out of power in either the House or Senate. Failure to at least try this last defense of democracy would be a deeply immoral, catastrophic failure. Of course, assumes that it isn’t already too late to save our democracy, rule of law and civil liberties.

Oh boy, this does not sound like Common Sense, this sounds like more hyper partisan politics at it’s worst!

I’m sorry we disagree on this one, Daryl–but I appreciate your posting your view, and I am grateful for your support for the Common Sense Party of California.
      Kind regards,

Your opinion on this point is is truly surprising. Apparently you do not see Trump and MAGA politics as authoritarian, deeply corrupt or anti-democratic. That is how most experts on democracy see it, not just me. There are obvious reasons why Trump fires IG’s without justification, and gets rid of ethics officers. He illegally fires heads of independent agencies. He obviously wants to be a dictator.

The USSC put Trump above the law by its immunity decision and empowered his overpowering autocratic impulses by its embrace of the unitary executive theory. The USSC itself has gone authoritarian rogue on the shadow docket. That so many people cannot see the obvious authoritarian-kleptocratic threat truly frightens me. I deeply fear for myself and my family. My family contains members of a target community that MAGA bigots love to vilify and dehumanize. MAGA elites openly want power to legally discriminate against my family and others like them. My country has been poisoned by MAGA demagoguery, lies and slanders.

It sounds like common sense to me. Trump and MAGA are authoritarian and corrupt. That much is not reasonably disputed. Obviously, hyper-partisans disagree. Our democracy will not withstand another two years of unfettered MAGA control. We are in a period of rapid authoritarian power consolidation. That is not my opinion, it is how experts see it. I am partisan in favor of democracy, the rule of law, civil liberties, transparent and public interest-focused governance, and respect for facts, truths, and sound reasoning, even when they are inconvenient. Trump and MAGA stand for the opposite of that. I an no the radical here. Trump and MAGA are.
